Beethoven who was a coffee lover, was so particular about his coffee that he always counted 60 beans each cup when he prepared his brew.
Coffee was brought into Costa Rica from Cuba by a Spanish traveller, Navarro, in 1779. Hence it is not their native plant.
Personal note: Who knew? Now they grow some of the best coffee beans (berries) in the world. My last trip to Costa Rica I packed one suitcase with coffee beans to bring back to my friends as gifts!
A coffee tree matures after about 5 years and yields about 1 pound of coffee beans per year on average. Both Robusta and Arabica coffee trees may produce coffee crops for more than 25 years if they are well cared for.
About 42 coffee beans are needed to make one shot of espresso, and about 4,000 coffee beans are found in one pound of roasted coffee. A 132-pound sack of coffee contains about 600,000 coffee beans.
Special studies conducted about the human body revealed it will usually absorb up to about 300 milligrams of caffeine at a given time. About 4 normal cups. Additional amounts are just cast off, providing no further stimulation. Also, the human body dissipates 20% of the caffeine in the system each hour.
Personal note: To all my friends who marvel at my caffeine intake….see, after 4 cups it’s purely for the taste!
Turkish bridegrooms were once required to make a promise during their wedding ceremonies to always provide their new wives with coffee. If they failed to do so, it was grounds for divorce!
